Hong Kong Approves Fuel Surcharge Increases For Two Airlines

The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department has given approval for the increase of passenger fuel surcharges levied by Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines for the period from August 1, 2009, to September 30, 2009.

The new maximum levels of fuel surcharges will be HKD69 for short-haul flights and HKD318 for long-haul flights, which represents an increase of about 33% from the current maximum levels. The applicable surcharge levels are based on the date of ticket issue.

According to a CAD spokesman, it is an international practice for airlines to levy passenger fuel surcharges. Compared with the average level of surcharges around the world, the surcharges on local routes are quite low.
