Beijing To Develop 62 Tourism Valleys In Five Years

Beijing is planning to develop tourism in 62 valleys with different characteristics in five years, to meet the varied needs of Beijing citizens.

According to Chen Tao, the deputy director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Rural Affairs, there are many valleys in Beijing's mountainous areas, and 2,053 of these are over one kilometer in length, and of these 124 are worthy of development. After several years of development, 17 valleys are now well-known places for Beijing citizens to spend holidays: including Buyegu in Huairou, Yunmeng Avenue in Miyun, and Meiguigu in Mentougou.

Chen said the commission is planning to develop 62 valleys in five years, and each of them will have distinct characteristics. To protect the environment throughout the development period there will be proper sewage treatment and solid waste disposal facilities.

The public bidding for the first seven valleys will start in 2010, said Chen. These seven valley will be selected from seven districts or counties in the mountainous areas.
